Yooooga!!

I have taken for granted how weak my breathe has become. Boy does it feel good though now. I started up the yoga again this past Tuesday. I got through the hour class starting with my breathe being so weak eventually it was forceful and made me really light headed. My body seemed to remember where it left off except in the strength and balance department. I could not for the life of me do eagle or just balance on one leg. Partly because I got my heart rate up really high and didn't feel strong. It felt so good to breathe and make my lungs work again. As much as deep breathing throughout the day is good for me, yoga does all the right things. I was going to go again, but my hamstrings protested too much.

The past two days I've been walking and making a conscious effort to not sit around. I need a job outside for sure. Like a nature guide, gardener or yoga instructor on the beach. I am looking into becoming some sort of fitness instructor because physical exercise is the most natural of ways of airway clearance. I'm really good at being lazy so I have to be all excited about exercising. It is really funny whenever I tell people I exercise or even at an exercise class, they look me up and down and say it's not like you need it. That's the beauty of it, I can enjoy class and at the end eat a granola bar and feel even better. I'm exercising to build strength and muscle, so I need to replace all the calories I lose. I really wish other people would take a more positive approach to working out instead of the same ole, I must be super thin approach, I have to punish myself because I ate all those brownies this weekend jibber jabber. I agree it is hard to fit fitness into our daily lives. I think that office desk, chair and computer are more of reason for an extra pound or two than a candy bar. I read an article just about standing around. Our bodies were designed to stand (hello, only 2 feet) as oppose to sitting or on all fours. The article recommended trying to stand during activities we usually sit for, best example, talking on the phone. Now with wireless it's so much easier. Our bodies do like it when we stand, the blood flows better, just imagine your twisted veins in the sitting position. I breathe better standing, my diaphragm can expand and my posture is just better. So here is to mountain pose ( stand strong and still) more often.

Next on my fitness plan, swimming! I have found a saline pool! Quick biology lesson, water follows salt. All through out our bodies there are ion channels and balances (ions like Ca2+ or K2+) that make things happen. One tiny little thing went wrong in my genetics and my chloride channels became defective, meaning, I can't get salt to the cellular lining of my lungs, ere go, water does not like to visit my lung lining, causing dehydrated lungs and thicker secretions. What does this have to do with swimming, a simple delivery system of salty air and water to my lungs encourages hydration. And chlorine is just plain bad for me, especially high concentrations are very irritating and toxic. One of my medications I nebulize is a hyper tonic solution of saline, developed in response to Australian CF surfers. They had better lung function than non surfer patients, because they were exposed to salt water and air. So keeping hydrated while working out has a double meaning for me. I love science.
