Midnight Watch

Today my mom had eye surgery for a condition she has, fuchs dystrophy. Her cornea cells are separating from the eye. So thanks to an eye donor, they replaced the cells. She also had cataracts removed too. She had the right eye done last year so she knew what to expect. She is still a trooper. I can handle pain, but I am a wimp when it comes to matters of the eyes or problems with finger nails. She got through it and tomorrow the doctor will remove the patch to reveal good eyesight!

Tonight I have to stay up with my mom because she has to keep her head straight while sleeping on her back. It reminds me of my freshman college days, laboring into the early hours of the morning on Writing 140 papers. I hated that class. To be 18 again when staying up until 4am chatting away with my new college friends was normal. I can barely stay up until 11 now. I drank a Dr. Pepper 2 hours ago...My dad will wake up at 4am (close to his normal wake up time, 5am!). I don't know how he does it. My mom sees the doctor at 8 and here's praying she does see him.

Taking care of my mother has proven I am not a good caretaker. I am not the most quick responsive person. I am not patient nor empathetic. I'm the walk it off type person. While I am sitting here doing my thing and she asks for something I am slow to respond. This afternoon I was really weary so it was even harder for me to focus on taking care of her. Just as soon as I sit down she asks for me to shift the pillows again or get her some water or remove the covers. I don't mind just ask me while I'm still standing there. I'm awful, she has taken such good care of me all these years! Being a caretaker is exhausting, you have to intuitively know how to help the person. Since my mom is slightly in pain and can not move, so she doesn't disrupt the pressure bubble keeping the cells in place, she is short when I can't make her comfortable quickly. I just need to suck it up and smile to help her through the transition! She is sleeping now so night watch begins. She has pillows on both sides but I still have to watch her.

I am enjoying late night talk shows since I'm usually sound asleep by the time they come on tv. I just saw a jem! Jimmy Kimmel just interviewed an author of the book, "Milk, Eggs and Vodka", about his collection of grocery store lists he has found. I could not stop laughing after he read a normal list of eggs, milk, juice and then a special note, "if you buy more rice I will punch you." Oh my gosh that is so great, a wife to her husband who isn't paying any attention. He explains these list are very personal and they can be hard to find. People seem to hold on to their lists. I know I stick mine back in my bag. Another one had a list of things and then PIE written twice as big. They also needed tush cream. I must read more of this book for some more belly laughs.

I also have seen new summer toys, where Letterman climbed into a big plastic gerbil ball. That's just as bad as the kid leash! It looks way fun, I would totally do it, but then does that mean I'm as easily entertained as a gerbil....I saw an interview with Joshua Gordon-Levitt, he is so cute!! Loved him in 3rd rock from the sun and 500 days of summer! Dakota Fanning was on Leno, I love her too. I pray she stays normal and doesn't go through that awkward rebellion phase. I saw her once at a church event in LA, she is grounded in her faith and her family. I kind of miss not being up to date with all the Hollywood happenings but I do like my sleep. I would read all the magazines when I was in the biz but now with the internet there is too much information out there I can't even begin to keep up with who is screwing who and the next star perfume line. I swear tv writers who are out of work due to reality game shows are writing stars lives out in trash magazines. I wanted to be a talk show host back in the day. I love interviewing people. I loved the idea of having a group of writers work with me to hash out the daily news. I created a demo for a teen talk show, but didn't get very far with it. Maybe one day I will appear on late night tv.

I think it is time for a netflix movie, too many commercials on TV. And no I don't have tivo, our family doesn't even have a flat screen tv yet. Yes, we're holding on to 1989, our family room tv might be older than that. On that note, I'm really annoyed by those AT&T commercials where you can record on the nice tv in the kitchen for the kids in the play room, or play it in the living room, or the man cave or your closet. Seriously, do you people have nothing better to spend your money on than putting really nice flat screens on every wall of your house!! I think it is healthy to have one tv and you get to fight over what program you are going to watch. Survival of the tv fittest. Or do like my mother does an watch 5 programs all at the same time.

Goodnight
